Laminate Flooring - The Laws of Maintenance
Max Patel
If you have gone ahead and gifted yourself some sparkling laminate flooring for your house, you can pat yourself on the back for making a wise choice but the job is only half done yet. To get the maximum out of your laminates, its necessary that specific care be taken about its maintenance. But don’t worry just yet – its not some super-skilled highly technical job to do to take care of the flooring. All you need to do is to keep some basic fundamentals in mind and your laminate flooring will be good as new for quite some time to come. As far as hardwood flooring is concerned, do check out our section on hardwood flooring to see how to keep it going in the long run.
Laminate flooring in general does not require too much maintenance intensive effort as compared to hardwood flooring or bamboo flooring. In fact, most laminate manufacturers offer a residential warranty that could range anywhere between 10 to 20 years and more against common household flooring defects such as staining, colour and hue, deep dents etc. When there is danger of staining, you don’t need to reach out to your acids just yet, but to a mop and a wet towel! That’s the simplicity of maintaining the laminate flooring free from stains. With regular vacuuming as well, the life of the flooring can be extended quite significantly.
The most common danger to the laminate floor is scratching that may happen due to the abrasion of sand particles or other such hard material against the floor as people walk or drag furniture etc. This danger exists irrespective of the type of flooring be it hardwood flooring or be it bamboo flooring, although in the case of the latter it’s not as easily distinguishable. The solution to this problem is simple – regular cleaning of the floor with a vacuum cleaner or broom and a periodic cleaning of the door mats and foot brushes. This is for dry cleaning the flooring but if you wanted to do a wet clean, you should use an ammonia-based solution as recommended by most manufacturers. Several resources on the net also recommend a vinegar-water mix – with equal contribution of white vinegar, water and rubbing alcohol and a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
Don’t worry even if due to all these precautions, scratches do appear on the laminate flooring. You can get a touch-up stick in the market that will help you cover over the scratch and make it look like it was never there. For more extensive damage, you can call up the firm that did your laminate flooring and ask them to change just the particular plank which has borne the damage for a very nominal price.
Keep these laws of laminate flooring in mind and you will surely hang on to your greenbacks for a long time to come!
