Without much further ado, here is the inside story on laminate flooring.
A quick recap here: Laminate flooring is a synthetic flooring solution that resembles the look of real conventional wood, is easy to install and has on the average, longer life. Laminate flooring in its essence is made up of four different layers – the stabilizing layer, the core, the decorative paper layer and the overlay. The stabilizing layer is basically the bottom most layer on which the rest of the layers get mounted on and hence this layer is strong, and usually termite proof and moisture resistant. On this, the core layer is placed, which is extremely tough and hard due to the resin content (can comprise of either high density fibre-boards or medium density fibre-boards). This acts as a further barrier to any moisture that might seep in from the top.
The decorative paper layer can be viewed as the apparel of the floor – and give any kind of look to it ranging from cemented stone designs right up to intricate and genuine wood reproductions. There are two options for the decorative layer – the DPL (direct pressure laminate) and the HPL (high pressure laminate) which offer varying degrees of strength, the latter being the stronger. On top of this is where comes the overlay or the wear layer as it’s popularly known for its meant to withstand wear and tear due to daily usage. This is usually a melamine resin which can withstand high level of usage without wilting or getting scratched dented etc. The cost of the laminate flooring owes a significant part to the overlay and the decorative layer being used.
So that’s what you are going in for when you actually go ahead with the purchase of laminate flooring for your home or office. With this knowledge, you will be able to truly appreciate your flooring when you see it. But installing is only the first leg of getting laminate flooring. Post-installation maintenance deserves special mention as well, more on which you will find as you navigate through the rest of our site.
