Engineered Hardwood Flooring : What You Must Know !
Max Patel
Hardwood flooring is available in two formats – solid hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood flooring. Of the two, the latter is not very widely bandied about and tends to have a relatively lesser amount of information available in public resources. While this may be true, it does not give an accurate reflection of the growing popularity of engineered hardwood flooring, its multifarious uses and the advantages it has over laminate flooring or bamboo flooring. This article attempts to shed some light on this particular genre of hardwood flooring with some useful sets of information.
Engineered hardwood flooring is the manna for people who are looking to have hardwood flooring in places where moisture content is higher than desirable levels. As you might be aware of, excessive moisture has an adverse effect on solid hardwood flooring and could render it completely useless in extreme cases. This fundamental reason is what has enhanced the popularity of engineered hardwood floors, its ability to withstand higher moisture content. Not only this but the added advantage is the ability of the engineered hardwood flooring to be glued directly on to the concrete floor below offering remarkable convenience and flexibility of installation. In this aspect, this is similar to laminate flooring as well.
Engineered hardwood is different from solid hardwood in its physical structure. While the latter is normally single blocks, the former is made up of stacking different layers of wood and laminates to form a durable structure that is more resistant to ambient conditions than normal wood. Consisting of two layers, i.e. the top layer of hardwood and the core consisting of several bonded plywood layers, this engineered hardwood does not bend or warp as easily because of heightened structural strength. These qualities endear the engineered hardwood floor over laminate flooring and other such types, particularly in cases of below ground flooring where the moisture content is likely to be on the higher side. Also, the floating floor option can be used in the case where the sub floor, normally concrete is clean and dry.
Thus engineered hardwood floors are becoming a suitable alternative to solid hardwood flooring giving almost the same look and feel of the solid wood at a fraction of the cost. Given its physical advantages over the flooring options like laminate flooring or bamboo flooring, we are sure that the boom we are seeing today is just the tip of the iceberg. In days to come, the world of flooring will be truly revolutionized by the awesome engineering miracles that have punctuated the flooring world. And none better than engineered hardwood flooring!
